Former England captain Michael Atherton said India now have a strong chance of completing the treble after their T20 World Cup triumph. On Sunday, March 8, Suryakumar Yadav’s team won the title, defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Last year, India won the Champions Trophy by beating New Zealand in Dubai and followed it up with a T20 World Cup victory over the same opponents. With the ODI World Cup 2027 being jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, India will have the opportunity to hold all three ICC limited-overs trophies simultaneously.

“In the last few ICC global events before today, India have won 30 out of 32 matches, losing only the 50-run World Cup final against Australia and the match against South Africa earlier in the tournament,” Atherton told Sky Sports.
“Across all formats of white-ball cricket, they have been dominant and fully deserved their victory. Now they have the opportunity to hold the Champions Trophy, T20 World Cup and 50-over World Cup at the same time, which will surely be their next goal,” added Atherton.
HOW INDIA DID IN T20 WC 2026
India started their FIFA T20 World Cup 2026 campaign strongly in the group stage, comfortably defeating the likes of Netherlands and Namibia to set the early pace. Against the Netherlands, contributions from Shivam Dube and Suryakumar Yadav helped India to a 17-run victory, while against Namibia, Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya saw off a 93-run victory that set the tone for the Super Eight stage.
In the Super Eight round, India faced a setback with a heavy 76-run loss to South Africa, putting their semi-final hopes under pressure. They bounced back strongly with Sanju Samson scored an unbeaten 97 against West Indies at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata to claim a decisive five-wicket win to revive their campaign.
India then outclassed England in a high-scoring semi-final, posting 253 for seven, with Samson’s 89 anchoring the innings, and they held their nerve to win by seven runs. In the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, India dominated New Zealand, posting a record 255 for five and winning by a huge margin to clinch the T20 World Cup titles on home soil.
