India made history books by becoming the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title and the first team to win the tournament on home soil. In a dominant final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, India crushed New Zealand by 96 runs to lift their third T20 World Cup trophy, sending fans across the country into frenzied celebration.
Talk to post-match press conference, Gambhir took a moment to take credit for the architects behind India’s sustained success — the men who built the system long before the trophies arrived.
He reserved special praise for former head coach Rahul Dravid, crediting him for maintaining the structure and stability of the team during his tenure – the foundation Gambhir built on to achieve championship results.
Gambhir also shed light on VVS Laxman, who heads BCCI’s center of excellence, and praised his often unseen but vital contributions in identifying and nurturing the next generation of Indian cricketing talent through the national pipeline.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar also got a hearty mention. Acknowledging the criticism Agarkar often faces, Gambhir praised his honesty and unwavering commitment to the role.
Perhaps the most personal honor, however, was reserved for ICC Chairman Jay Shah. Gambhir revealed that Shah was the only voice of support during the darkest periods of his coaching tenure, after the back-to-back series losses to New Zealand and South Africa.
“Not many people actually called me when I was going through the worst moments of my tenure. The only one who really called me was Jay Bhai,” Gambhir said, underscoring the importance of loyalty and faith when results don’t go your way.
It was a team effort in every sense – on and off the pitch.
