“When you lift the trophy and accept it, I will start dancing,” Gavaskar said. “Dancing is my cardio. Everyone else does intense cardio, but I can’t do it at my age. So I do a little bit of cardio, and that’s dancing. There’s so much joy in seeing your captain and your country’s flag go up. Sometimes the emotions just come out.”
On Sunday, March 8, Gavaskar fulfilled the promise.
First, just before the presentation, a Native American legend was seen dancing, captured by broadcasters.
When India beat New Zealand to lift the T20 World Cup for the third timethe legendary batsman could not contain his excitement and joined the Indian team in celebrating the victory. Gavaskar decided to shake a leg with Suryakumar and the Indian captain complied. A portion of Gavaskar and Suryakumar’s dance can be seen in the following video:
WHAT DID GAVASKAR SAY ABOUT SURYAKUMAR?
Gavaskar heaped praise on Suryakumar after winning the T20 World Cup. Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar said that Suryakumar has been in the form of Rohit Sharma and is a leader in the dressing room that everyone looks up to.
“He’s such a calm, cool, collected captain, basically in the mold of Rohit Sharma. Always smiling, always positive in his approach and attitude. He started by bailing India out of an embarrassing situation against USA, scoring 84. He’s definitely a leader and everyone looks up to him,” said Suryakumar.
The win made Suryakumar the fourth Indian captain to win the World Cup.
