Financial independence on the home front as well as at the societal level is the key to ensure women empowerment, Tirupati District Collector S. Venkateswara said at the International Women’s Day celebrations held at the SPMVV auditorium on Sunday.
The Collector along with MLA Arani Srinivasulu and Tirupati Municipal Corporation Commissioner N. Mourya explained how financial independence is at par with happiness and health.
Highlighting that the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ scheme enables rural women from Self Help Groups (SHGs) to achieve an annual household income of ₹ 1 lakh, he added that Tirupati district has more than 1.60 lakh ‘Lakhpati Didis’, pointing to the income opportunities generated by MEPMA, DRDA and other agencies.
The district administration has sanctioned financial assistance of ₹2,600 crore in the last 11 months to 14,600 SHGs which have a collective strength of 2 lakh women. Similarly, 10.88 lakh families avail gas cylinders under ‘Deepam Scheme’.
