In an apparent attempt to put pressure on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers on Sunday carried out cleaning activities at the Government Sanskrit College in the city. CPI(M) Councilor Vanchiyur P. Babu told reporters that the Corporation had failed to clear garbage from many places even five days after Attukal Pongala.
The workers removed the garbage as well as the bricks used for offering Pongala, which were lying strewn across the college campus. The CPI(M) also accused the corporation of dumping Pongala waste on Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) land near Eenchakkal. General Education Minister V Sivankutty on Friday directed a Finance Division Officer (RDO) to check any lapses in cleaning activities and submit an urgent report after a large amount of garbage was spotted near the Attukal temple.
Although the corporation has denied any wrongdoing, it transferred 10 health inspectors on Saturday. Mayor VV Rajesh said the moves were not related to waste management failures but to improve administration.
