New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani marked the Iftar this week at Bungalow, a Manhattan restaurant run by celebrity Indian chef Vikas Khanna — a visit that held unusual personal significance for both men.

Khanna took to Instagram to share details of the evening, revealing that the two paths first crossed more than two decades ago when Mamdani, as an eight-year-old, accompanied his mother, filmmaker Mira Nair, to a restaurant in Tribeca, where Khanna was just finding her footing after a difficult period in her life.
“I had just survived homelessness, left a very abusive job and started working at Salaam Bombay restaurant in Tribeca. I loved the name – it was also my favorite film by the iconic Mira Nair. One day Mira came in with her very young eight year old son Zohran (sic),” Khanna wrote.
The mayor, who was elected to lead the city earlier this year, broke his fast in the traditional way – first with a date before sitting down to a full Iftar meal personally prepared by the chef.
For the occasion, Bungalow set up what Khanna described as a “Table of Grace” – a dedicated space with items of faith and cultural significance, including Islamic prayer beads, henna cones, Muslim prayer caps, bottles of ittar and jars of surma, arranged alongside the restaurant’s usual fresh flowers, candles and incense.
Khanna spoke warmly of Nair’s role in his early years in New York, describing her as “one of the most supportive people” he met when he arrived in the city, noting that he had catered several of her events over the years.
He was clearly moved by the reunion. “And today, 25+ years later, I had the privilege of cooking for the same young lad – now a global leader shaping the future of New York. Life truly does come full circle (sic),” he wrote.
In his final words, he addressed the mayor directly. “Thank you Zohran Mamdani for celebrating Iftar with us today. Cooking was deeply personal to you 25 years ago – and today it feels even more meaningful (sic),” he said.
Opened in recent years, Bungalow has established itself as one of New York’s most sought-after tables, attracting a steady stream of high-profile guests in addition to its regular clientele.
