Abhishek Sharma had earlier shrugged off his poor form and stepped in at the right time, bringing up his half-century in just 18 deliveries. Abhishek’s 18-ball 50 is the fastest in this World Cup, surpassing the 19-ball mark by Aiden Markram, Jacob Bethell and Shimron Hetmyer. It is also the fastest fifty in a T20 World Cup knockout match.
Samson powered India’s attack against New Zealand with a mixture of timing, composure and clean hitting. The wicketkeeper-batsman had already scored a half-century in the semi-final and followed it up with another commanding performance in the final, joining Shahid Afridi and Virat Kohli as the only players to score fifties in both knockout matches of the same edition of the T20 World Cup. Afridi first achieved the feat during Pakistan’s winning run in 2009, while Kohli replicated it for India in 2014.
Samson’s innings was built smartly. After Abhishek Sharma’s explosive start at the top, he ensured India did not lose momentum. Samson brought up his 50 off 33 balls, batting with control and keeping the score ticking with crisp hitting and smart placement before accelerating against the New Zealand attack.
The momentum grew further when Samson found support from Ishan Kishan at the other end. The pair put on a quick-fire partnership of 50 runs off just 26 balls as India crossed the 150-run mark in the 12th over. Samson continued to dominate the bowling attack and ended up with a stunning 46-ball 89 that set a new benchmark for an Indian batsman in a T20 World Cup final.
The innings also marked Samson’s third consecutive 50-plus score in the tournament, placing him among an elite group of players to achieve the feat in T20 World Cups alongside Mahela Jayawardene, Virat Kohli, Babar Azam, KL Rahul, Kusal Mendis and Sahibzada Farhan.
