Organic farming can make farming profitable and sustainable and the TDP-led NDA government is promoting organic farming practices across the state, said BC, EWS Welfare, Handlooms and Textiles Minister S. Savitha.
The minister was speaking at a workshop on natural farming for economically weaker sections organized by EWS welfare department in Vijayawada on Saturday (March 7). Farmers from across the state participated in the workshop and interacted with experts on various aspects of natural farming.
Ms. Savitha said that while implementing welfare programs for the EWS communities, the government is also supporting initiatives that promote self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods. She found that the rising cost of fertilizers and pesticides was putting an increasing burden on farmers, and that by reducing reliance on chemicals and using natural resources, agriculture could be more profitable.
Organic farming products also command higher prices and enjoy strong market demand, she added.
The minister had earlier inspected stalls with vegetables, pulses and other agricultural products grown using organic fertilizers. She interacted with farmers, inquired about the organic inputs used in cultivation and appreciated them for adopting natural farming practices.
Special Principal Secretary, EWS Welfare, K. Sunitha, said the department is taking several initiatives to empower EWS communities through sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Among those present were Chairman of Arya Vysya Corporation Doondi Rakesh, Chairman of Kamma Corporation Nadendla Brahmam Chowdary, Chairman of Brahmin Corporation Bucchi Ram Prasad, Managing Director of Arya Vysya and Kshatriya Corporations M.
