Six coaches of a coal freight train derailed in Madhya Pradesh’s Katni district on Saturday (March 7, 2026), severely disrupting rail services on the busy route and forcing several trains to be diverted.
Work is underway on a war footing to restore the track on the New Katni Junction (NKJ) section, West Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Harshit Shrivastava told PTI.
A team from Jabalpur was at the spot and was supervising the repairs, he said.
The derailment occurred around 10:30 am near Cabin A in the NKJ area, affecting rail traffic on routes connected to Bilaspur in neighboring Chhattisgarh.
Katni Area Manager Rohit Singh told reporters that the freight train loaded with coal was heading to West Baroda from Bilaspur when six of its coaches derailed.
Railwaymen and staff rushed to the spot after receiving the information and started assessing the situation, he added.
According to officials, rail services towards Bilaspur were affected, with four trains being diverted, two being short-term and two trains short-originating.
