
The University of Calicut (CU) has imposed restrictions on the entry and exit of hostel residents at its main campus at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district.
University sources said the decision was taken in view of complaints regarding substance abuse and drug mafia activities in the area. Students who leave the dormitories after 21:30 will enter their name in the register with an explanation of the reason for leaving. They should also note the time of re-entry in the diary. All roads to the campus except the main entrance will be locked after 7 pm All roads to the male dormitory except the main entrance will be locked. A temporary gate will be installed on the newly built road connecting the highway with the administrative block. This gate will also be closed at 7 p.m
Meanwhile, a section of students on Thursday (March 5) protested on campus against the decision to make letters from the respective heads of departments mandatory for continuing lab work late into the night. Officials of the Students’ Federation of India claimed that the condition had been withdrawn after discussions with the registrar on Friday (March 6).
Vice-Chancellor (VC) P. Raveendran said in a message that strict measures will be taken to curb substance abuse in and around the university. Recently, there were reports of drugs worth crores of rupees being seized around the campus premises. This was the reason for the concern of the academic community. It was the duty of the university to ensure the safety of students on campus and a healthy academic atmosphere, he added.
