At least 33 people were injured after the pre-dawn explosion at the Dalí nightclub in Trujillo, a province along Peru’s northern coast, the AP news agency reported.
It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the explosion, and the motive remains unknown. The region has recently been plagued by violence and crime, the report added.
Dozens of clubgoers were watching a cumbia performance when an explosion rocked the venue, local station Sol TV Peru reported.
Five of them are in serious condition
Citing Trujillo Health Network Executive Director Gerardo Florián Gómez, at least five people are in serious condition. Several victims underwent surgery after suffering amputations and shrapnel injuries. Among the injured are three minors: two 17-year-olds and one 16-year-old, Florián said.
Witnesses recall the horror
Fiorella Mantilla, who was in the nightclub during the explosion, told reporters she had glass embedded in her legs and recalled, “It sounded like the sound system had suddenly been turned off.”
A video published by local newspaper La República showed people shouting “Bomb!” and then “Let’s go!” after the explosion. The footage also captured a woman lying on the floor with someone shouting: “Help that girl!
The second explosion in less than two months
The explosion came less than a month after a separate explosion in Trujillo damaged about 25 houses but caused no injuries or deaths.
The La Libertad region continues to struggle with extortion and illegal mining. Its Andean regions include the largest gold-producing zone in Peru. Official figures show that the region recorded 286 explosions in 2025, with 136 of them occurring in Trujillo.
Authorities say the growth of organized crime groups has led to an increase in related crimes such as extortion.
The incident comes amid a wider crime crisis in Peru, where police reported 2,200 organized crime-related murders last year.
