Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (March 7, 2026) congratulated the people and government of Nepal for the successful conduct of the elections and said the historic milestone was a proud moment in Nepal’s democratic journey.
Prime Minister Modi also said that as a close friend and neighbor, India remains steadfast in its commitment to work closely with the people of Nepal and its new government to achieve new heights of shared peace, progress and prosperity.
“I heartily congratulate the people and government of Nepal for a successful and peaceful election. It is heartening to see my Nepalese sisters and brothers exercising their democratic rights so vibrantly. This historic milestone is a proud moment in Nepal’s democratic journey,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
Rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah’s Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) on Saturday (March 7, 2026) cruised to a landslide victory in Nepal’s first general election since last year’s violent Gen Z protests, shattering the dominance of established political parties.
The RSP, created in 2022 by Ravi Lamichhane, has won 39 of the 50 seats declared so far, including a clean sweep in 10 constituencies of Kathmandu district, and leads in 80 others, according to the Election Commission of Nepal.
The RSP, which has fielded Balendra Shah as its prime ministerial candidate and organized its first election campaign in Janakpur in Madhesh, is moving towards a clean sweep of the province.
