Hotel room rates in Ahmedabad have risen dramatically ahead of the T20 World Cup final between India and New Zealand, with rates rising by as much as 300-400 percent as cricket fans from across India and overseas flock to the city for Sunday’s clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Narendra Somani, a hotelier and president of the Gujarat Hotel and Restaurant Association, said the surge in demand has pushed room rates significantly higher than usual.

“Room rates have increased by 300-400 percent due to high demand in view of the WC T20 final. Rooms which were available for Rs 5,000-20,000 are now priced between Rs 15,000-50,000,” he told PTI.
Online travel portals also reflect a sharp increase in tariffs at several leading hotels across the city.
A ‘deluxe room’ for two at the Taj Skyline on Sindhu Bhavan Road is currently listed at around Rs 2.01 lakh plus GST 36,000 for a Sunday night. On normal days, the same room usually costs between Rs 9,000 and Rs 15,000, a nearly 20-fold increase.
Similarly, room rates at Welcomhotel by ITC Hotels on Ashram Road are showing around Rs 20,950 on booking platforms, significantly more than the usual range of Rs 6,000 to 8,000.
At the Hyatt Regency Ahmedabad, room rates hover around Rs 30,000 for a match night – almost four times the standard fare charged on other days.
Somani said Ahmedabad has around 10,000 hotel rooms of various categories. While demand has surged for the final, the city is not expected to be completely sold out.
“We expect hotels in and around the city to be nearly 80 percent occupied on Sunday for the match,” he said.
As hotel prices are on the rise, many visitors are opting for alternative solutions instead of overnight stays in Ahmedabad.
Somani said some fans chose to stay in Gandhinagar, which is about 25 kilometers from the city, while others travel to Ahmedabad just for the match and return the same day.
“A lot of people, especially people from Mumbai, leave in the morning by road. They come here at four or five o’clock and go straight to the match. They bring a driver and leave at night,” Somani said.
Fans from other parts of Gujarat follow a similar course.
“They do the same thing; they come in their car and leave in their car. Say from Rajkot or Porbandar,” he added.
Apart from domestic travellers, foreign visitors have also started arriving in the city to witness the momentous final between India and New Zealand.
