Formula 1 has always been about pushing boundaries. Faster, louder, more spectacular. But 2026 feels different. With a complete overhaul of the technical regulations, every team on the grid is starting from roughly the same place, and in a sport where tiny margins separate success from failure, that is an enormously exciting prospect.
This is the season where reputations mean nothing and results mean everything. New champions could emerge, struggling teams could suddenly find themselves competitive, and the established order at the front could be turned completely on its head. Buckle up.

What’s Changing in 2026?
Formula 1 has seen a major overhaul for the 2026 season, with new rules designed to make the cars faster, safer, greener, and more exciting to watch. Here is what is changing.
Smaller, Lighter Cars: The cars will be 30kg lighter than the previous generation and will also be shorter and narrower. Think of it as going from an SUV to a more sporty hatchback. This means that the new edition will be quicker to react and faster around corners, and definitely more fun to watch up close.
The New Engine: The power unit has seen a complete redesign. For the first time, there will be a roughly 50–50 split between electric power and the traditional petrol-based engine. The electric side of things is getting three times more powerful than before. In addition, the cars will be running completely on sustainable fuels, meaning that the sport is taking a major step towards being more green without ditching the traditional combustion engine fully.
Six Engine Suppliers: The new rules have attracted a record six manufacturers to build engines: Ferrari, Mercedes, Renault, Honda, Audi, and Ford (via Red Bull). More competition at the engine level means more variety and rivalry throughout the grid.
Moving Wings (Active Aerodynamics): Previously, the cars used a system called DRS (Drag Reduction System), which is a flap on the rear wing that opens on straights to reduce drag and help to overtake. In 2026, both the front and rear wings will be able to move, switching between two modes: one optimised for gripping through corners, and one that cuts drag on the straights for higher top speeds. It is a smarter, more dynamic version of what we have today.
A New Overtaking Boost: A new feature called the Manual Override System allows drivers to get an extra surge of electric power when they are within one second of the car in front of them. A similar version of the DRS, some would say. This allows overtaking to be more frequent and the races more exciting.
What Do The Experts Think?
As the paddock braces for the most significant technical shake-up in a generation, it is worth pausing to ask what all of this actually means in practice.
Karun Chandhok, another Indian origin driver who has competed in F1, has been closer to these new cars than most, having sampled them on a simulator and sat in briefings with several of the top teams. His verdict is measured, thoughtful, and cuts through a lot of the noise surrounding the build-up to 2026.
One of the most talked-about concerns is energy management in qualifying. Max Verstappen has been vocal about losing what he describes as the “pure” feel of a qualifying lap, and Chandhok understands the frustration.
Previously, qualifying was the purest expression of what a driver and car could do together. One lap, everything on the limit, no compromises.
That feeling, at least in the early phase of these regulations, may be diluted by the demands of managing the hybrid systems. At certain circuits, drivers simply will not be able to go flat out in the traditional sense.
Chandhok is quick to point out, however, that managing something has always been part of Formula 1.
“In races, drivers have always managed something,” he says, pointing to turbo boost in the 1980s, fuel loads, and tyre degradation in more recent years. The difference now is that qualifying is affected too, though not at every circuit.
Bahrain, for instance, has so many braking zones that the battery can recharge rapidly, making energy less of a concern. Melbourne could be trickier.
On the simulator experience itself, Chandhok is genuinely enthusiastic. From low-speed corners right up to around 290 kilometres per hour, he describes the new cars as “incredibly quick,” noticeably faster than their predecessors thanks to lighter weight, stronger hybrid systems and active aerodynamics.
Beyond that threshold, the energy management effects begin to kick in.
That complexity, he believes, is precisely what will separate the great drivers from the rest.
“This era will reward intelligent drivers,” he says. Think ahead, manage your energy wisely, and you gain an edge.
Get it wrong, and you could be vulnerable several corners later. It becomes, in his words, “a strategic mental game.”
On the subject of fans worrying about drivers running out of boost mid-overtake, a clip that circulated widely from pre-season testing, Chandhok is reassuringly calm.
The boost concept is not new, he stresses. It has existed in various forms for over a decade. Testing footage can be deeply misleading, often showing the difference between a harvest lap and a push lap rather than anything fundamentally broken.
His advice to fans is simple. “Just watch it for what it is,” he says. Do not get lost in the technical jargon. That is the job of people embedded in the paddock, the analysts and engineers attending team briefings week in, week out.
The best drivers, in the best cars, on the best circuits in the world. “The essence of the sport,” as Chandhok puts it, “has not changed.”
The Teams: A Season Preview
McLaren — Lando Norris & Oscar Piastri
McLaren arrives as champions and favourites. Lando Norris claimed his first World Championship in 2025, beating Max Verstappen by just two points in one of the most thrilling title fights in recent memory.

He carries the number 1 on his car this season as a result. Oscar Piastri won seven races last year but narrowly missed out on the title himself.
Both drivers will be given equal treatment under the team’s famous papaya rules, which could make for some fascinating moments between teammates as the year unfolds.
Red Bull Racing — Max Verstappen & Isack Hadjar
Red Bull want their crown back. Verstappen remains the most complete driver on the grid despite losing his title, and his comeback last season from 104 points behind to nearly winning it all was the stuff of legend.

Alongside him is Isack Hadjar, a promising young Frenchman stepping up from sister team Racing Bulls. The second Red Bull seat has chewed up and spat out some good drivers over the years, so whether Hadjar can handle the pressure is one of the big questions of 2026.
Ferrari — Charles Leclerc & Lewis Hamilton
Ferrari is desperate to bounce back. A fourth-place finish in the Constructors’ Championship last year was a real disappointment, and the pressure at Maranello is immense as always.
Charles Leclerc enters his eighth season with the team still hunting for more race wins, while Lewis Hamilton begins year two in red after a tough debut that ended without a single podium.

The good news is that Ferrari deliberately shifted their focus towards 2026 early last season. If that gamble has paid off, they could be serious contenders again.
Mercedes — George Russell & Kimi Antonelli
Mercedes are quietly confident. George Russell was in title contention right up until the final stages of last season, and with a year of experience under his belt, young teammate Kimi Antonelli looks ready to push on too.

The Italian teenager showed flashes of serious brilliance in his debut year, and this partnership feels like it is only going to grow stronger. The big question is whether Mercedes have finally cracked the car they need to genuinely fight at the very front.
Aston Martin — Fernando Alonso & Lance Stroll
Aston Martin is the team with the most intrigue surrounding them heading into the new season. The arrival of legendary car designer Adrian Newey and a new partnership with Honda as their engine supplier had the whole paddock talking.

On paper, the ingredients are there for something special. In reality, though, serious reliability problems uncovered during winter testing have raised real concerns.
Vibrations from the power unit have been severe enough to limit how long Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll can drive without risking physical harm. Newey and the team have a lot to solve before they can even think about results.
Williams — Carlos Sainz & Alexander Albon
Williams is full of momentum. Last season, they scored more points than in the previous seven years put together, and Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon are one of the most effective driver pairings in the midfield. Sainz delivered a brilliant podium in Azerbaijan and followed it up with further top-three finishes later in the year.

The team is being rebuilt from the ground up under James Vowles, and the progress feels real. They head into 2026 with quiet confidence that the gap to the top is closing.
Alpine — Pierre Gasly & Franco Colapinto
Alpine are hoping that a year of pain was worth it. They finished last in the Constructors’ Championship in 2025 after choosing to focus almost entirely on preparing for the new rules rather than developing last year’s car. Whether that call was the right one will become clear quickly.
Pierre Gasly leads the team with real experience and determination, and Franco Colapinto showed enough in the second half of last season to suggest he belongs at this level. Team boss Flavio Briatore is targeting sixth in the standings, and with the regulation reset, it is not an unrealistic goal.
Audi — Nico Hulkenberg & Gabriel Bortoleto
Audi are in it for the long game. Nico Hulkenberg finally stood on the podium last year after 239 attempts, a moment that meant everything to him and the team. Alongside him, Brazilian youngster Gabriel Bortoleto had a solid debut season and looks ready to take another step forward.
As a manufacturer, Audi have openly stated their ambition to win a championship by 2030. For now though, it is about steady progress and learning what it takes to compete at this level consistently.
Racing Bulls — Liam Lawson & Arvid Lindblad
Racing Bulls have one of the most exciting stories on the grid this season. Liam Lawson is out to prove himself after a difficult spell at Red Bull early in 2025, and the new regulations give him the perfect chance to do exactly that. But his teammate is the real headline act.

Arvid Lindblad is just 18 years old and arrives as the only rookie on the 2026 grid, having already become the youngest race winner in Formula 2 history. The level of expectation surrounding him is enormous, and watching how quickly he finds his feet will be one of the highlights of the season.
Haas — Esteban Ocon & Ollie Bearman
Haas have grown quietly and steadily into a team that can cause problems for those above them. Esteban Ocon brings experience and consistency, while Ollie Bearman continues to develop into one of the more exciting young talents in the sport.
The American team believe the lessons learned in recent seasons have been channelled directly into their 2026 car, and if that is the case, leading the midfield pack is an achievable target.
Cadillac — Sergio Perez & Valtteri Bottas
Cadillac are the new kids on the block, but you would not know it from their driver lineup. Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas return to the grid after a year away each, and between them they bring decades of Formula 1 knowledge to this fresh project.

Getting up to speed as a brand new operation will take time, but the experience in that garage gives them the best possible chance of making an impression from day one.
WHAT HAPPENED IN QUALIFYING?
Mercedes arrived in Melbourne with questions surrounding them. They left Saturday with all of them answered.
George Russell claimed pole position for the Australian Grand Prix, his ninth career pole, topping all three segments of qualifying in dominant fashion. Teammate Kimi Antonelli joined him on the front row, giving Mercedes their first front-row lockout since the 2024 British Grand Prix. Russell’s pole time was almost eight-tenths of a second clear of the nearest non-Mercedes challenger, which tells you everything you need to know about where the Silver Arrows currently stand.
“It really came alive this afternoon,” Russell said, pointing to cooler track temperatures as a factor that suited the car particularly well.
Antonelli’s place on the front row was remarkable given the circumstances. A crash in final practice had left his car in pieces and his team scrambling to get him out for qualifying at all. They managed it, and the young Italian delivered.
Red Bull rookie Isack Hadjar was the story of the midfield, qualifying an impressive third on his debut for the senior team. His afternoon, however, was overshadowed by his teammate. Max Verstappen, four-time world champion and title favourite for many, crashed out in Q1 after his brakes locked approaching turn one, bringing out red flags and ending his session on the spot. The Dutchman will start from the back of the grid on Sunday.
Behind the top three, Ferrari and McLaren appear closely matched on pace. Leclerc qualified fourth with Piastri, Norris and Hamilton filling fifth through seventh, covered by just a tenth and a half.
Racing Bulls showed genuine progress, with Lawson eighth and highly-rated rookie Lindblad ninth on his Formula 1 debut.
Sunday should be fascinating.
