The Telangana High Court on Friday issued a notice to the state government after receiving a letter written by a woman from Mulugu district who alleged that the local authorities were collecting huge sums of money for allotment of houses under the state government’s prestigious Indiramma Housing Scheme.
Justices P. Sam Koshy and Narsinga Rao Nandikonda directed the Chief Secretary, District Collector Mulugu and other officials to file counter-affidavits in the matter within three weeks. Thippala Sai Bhavani, a widow from Mulugu district, wrote a letter to the HC saying that there was a big fraud in the selection of beneficiaries under the Indiramma housing scheme. She asked the HC to order a detailed inquiry into the allotment of houses by either the CBI or the Enforcement Directorate.
The woman claimed that she had applied for a house under the scheme but the mandal and village level officers ignored her plea. The officials concerned refused to consider her application as she resorted to fake, fabricated and false survey, she said. According to her, instead of conducting a genuine survey to identify persons who need houses among the poor, the officials were collecting money ranging from ₹ 50,000 to ₹ 1,000 for allotment of a house under the scheme.
The woman said that local political leaders are collecting huge sums of money under the guise of this scheme and it has become a permanent source of income for political leaders and local authorities. Some of them even used money illegally collected from house applicants for “microfinance loans” at exorbitant interest rates, the woman said.
