Karnataka Village Boy Gets NASA Contract, Gets ₹900 Million: Meet Awais Ahmed Who Spent His Childhood Without Internet | Today’s news
Awais Ahmed grew up in Aldur village in Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka. During his early childhood, internet access was largely unavailable. He first discovered the universe through encyclopedias that his father brought home.
These books introduced him to galaxies, planets, and cosmic mysteries. Without online videos, his curiosity grew through reading and imagination. This early fascination later shaped his entire career.
“Until 8th grade, I didn’t have access to the internet, so I spent a lot of time reading encyclopedias about space, science and technology. High school was also the time when I was captivated by my high school library and my lifelong obsession with books (sic) began,” Awais wrote on his website.
Ahmed studied Mathematics at BITS Pilani during his college years. He joined the Anant team, a student satellite project developed with ISRO. Later he also became the engineer of Hyperloop India. This team competed in the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition around the world.

Pixxel’s origins date back to 2018 and the IBM Watson AI Challenge. Ahmed and his colleague Kshitij Khandelwal needed detailed satellite images for crop analysis. They discovered that such data simply did not exist anywhere.
Traditional satellites often completely missed smaller, critical changes in the environment. Premature crop damage and methane emissions often went unnoticed. Instead of looking any further, the pair decided to create their own solution.
They launched Pixelxel in February 2019, still in their 20s. The first funding came from money borrowed from Ahmed’s father. The founders managed approx ₹10,000 per month during these initial days.
Pixelxel has since attracted significant investment from major international names. Google, Radical Ventures and Lightspeed all backed. She earned around $95 million (almost ₹900 million) in the total amount of financing.
Pixxel is now among the world’s most funded hyperspectral imaging companies. In 2025, the company placed all six Firefly satellites into orbit. These satellites observe more than 250 spectral bands.
This provides significantly more detail than traditional Earth observation satellites. Farmers can notice crop stress before visible damage occurs. Companies can use this advanced technology to detect methane leaks. Authorities can track illegal mining activity through the same systems.
International recognition
Pixxel has earned a spot on TIME magazine’s 100 Best Inventions of 2023 list. The World Economic Forum named it a technological pioneer in 2024. The company became the first Indian space startup with a NASA contract. She later signed a five-year contract with the US National Reconnaissance Office.
Ahmed has been honored by Forbes 30 Under 30 and MIT Innovators Under 35. Khandelwal has also appeared on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list.
Awais now shuttles between Bengaluru and Los Angeles. Both cities have Pixel offices.
