
Police have registered a case under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 against the owner of a wedding hall in Perundurai for allegedly refusing to rent out the venue to members of the scheduled caste community.
On March 3, K. Rani and her family members from Koorapalayam village in Nasiyanur approached the owner of a hall near Anna Silai in Perundurai to book a venue for her 23-year-old son’s wedding reception on March 15. The owner of the hall, Ravi, reportedly refused to allow the event after learning that the family belonged to the Scheduled Caste community. They complained that he would not provide a hall or provide food for the community members.
Subsequently, Rani along with members of the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front filed a complaint at the Perundurai police station.
Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against the owner of the hall according to § 3 paragraph 1 letter zc) of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. Police said Ravi was admitted to the hospital due to ill health. Further investigation is underway.
