The Congress party on Thursday (March 5, 2026) fielded Anurag Sharma as its candidate for the single Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal Pradesh.
Mr. Sharma has filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled to be held on March 16. Currently, Mr. Sharma is the president of the Kangra District Congress Committee and is considered close to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukh.
The candidature of Mr. Sharma, who hails from Kangra district, is seen as a balancing act by the party for regional representation. From Kangra district, where the Congress won 10 of the 15 seats in the 2022 assembly elections, only two legislators made it to the cabinet.
Having the maximum number of assembly seats (15), Kangra district is often considered to be the most politically important district in Himachal Pradesh.
