
Ahead of International Women’s Day, celebrations began in SPSR Nellore and Prakasam districts, with various organizations organizing cultural programmes, game competitions and awareness drives on Thursday, while the police department launched self-defence training initiatives for women and girls.
The Central Bureau of Communications under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in Nellore organized an awareness program on Thursday. CBC spokesperson P. Harikrishna highlighted the central government schemes being implemented for the welfare and empowerment of women.
As part of the Women’s Day celebrations, the Nellore District Police screened inspirational films for the students. District SP Dr. Ajitha Vejendla said that the female students were able to understand the message of women empowerment and equality through the films. She added that several programs will be organized till March 8 to help women develop mental strength and self-defense skills.
Similarly, V. Harshavardhan Raju, Superintendent of Police, Prakasam District, said police personnel at police stations, with the help of professional trainers, organized awareness and self-defence training programs for girls in schools and colleges. “Self-defense boosts women’s confidence and makes them physically and mentally strong,” he said.
District Collector Prakasam P. Raja Babu issued orders allowing women employees to participate in various competitions held as part of the celebrations till March 7. Around 400 female employees took part in the competition organized by the APNGO association in the RDO office.
Meanwhile, LEPRA Society, an NGO supporting the National Leprosy Eradication Programme, along with Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society organized an awareness program on HIV and TB at Shakti Sadan Home in Ongola. As part of the program, X-ray TB screening and tests for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B and C were carried out.
