A new fire station sanctioned by the state government was inaugurated for Mavoor in Kunnamangalam Assembly constituency on Thursday, with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurating the facility through video conferencing.
The new fire fighting facility, which has been waiting for implementation for more than a decade, would help deal with emergency situations in 15 local bodies in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Vijayan said that the Fire and Rescue Services Department was rendering exemplary service. He noted that the government has carried out modernization work worth ₹251 crore at fire stations across the state, ensuring that all stations are equipped with advanced equipment and ready for emergency response.
The Chief Minister pointed out that the devastating floods of 2018 prompted a comprehensive overhaul of the disaster response mechanism with a focus on scientific improvements. Apart from developing the fire academy into a center of excellence, civil defense units are also being supported to ensure people’s participation in disaster management efforts, he said.
He also made it clear that more volunteers would be trained under the civil defense program and that steps would be taken to strengthen special task forces. To ensure the participation of women in fire fighting, the government has recruited 100 women firefighters while 17 women diving teams have been commissioned, he pointed out.
Officials said the Mavoor fire station was implemented at a cost of ₹46 crore, including contributions from local businessmen and industrialists. She would be supported by a team of 18 firefighters, they added.
Director General Fire and Rescue Services Nitin Agarwal, Mavoor grama panchayat president C. Muneerath, Chathamangalam grama panchayat president MK Nadeera and Mavoor grama panchayat vice president CP Krishnan were present.
