An Indian Air Force Sukhoi-30 fighter jet lost radar contact while flying over Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on Thursday evening, PTI reported quoting officials.
“The IAF Su-30 MKI is reported overdue. The aircraft took off from Jorhat Airbase in Assam and was last contacted at 7:42 pm,” Defense PRO Lt. Col. Mahender Rawat said in a statement.
He said search and rescue operations have been launched to ascertain the condition of the fighter jet.
There is no immediate news about the pilot yet, the PRO said.
Meanwhile, another official reported that residents of the Chokihola area of Bokajan sub-division suggested that the plane may have crashed in a nearby forest.
“We are preparing a team to send it and verify it. We cannot confirm anything at this time,” he added.
The Su-30MKI is a two-seat, long-range, multi-role fighter aircraft originally developed by Russia’s Sukhoi.
It is currently manufactured under license by HAL for the Indian Air Force (IAF), which operates a fleet of more than 260 Su-30MKI jets.
