A few years ago, three underage girls from Maharashtra allegedly staged their own kidnapping in an attempt to earn money and visit South Korea to meet members of the very popular pop band BTS. This pop culture-influenced obsession with South Korea is very real and seems to be the seed behind Netflix’s Made In Korea, an Indo-Korean film starring Priyanka Mohan.
In the trailer unveiled on Wednesday (March 4), we see Priyanka as Shenba, a young woman from a small town in Tamil Nadu who wishes to fulfill her old dream of visiting South Korea. After saving the money needed for the trip, Shenba manages to go to Seoul where she has to face the harsh reality of life. With the help of the new friends she makes there, Shenba navigates these unfamiliar streets with courage and determination to find her footing in a world that is not home. The trailer promises a story of friendship and self-discovery.
In a press statement, Priyanka Mohan said, “Made In Korea and Shenba’s journey is deeply personal to me. It’s about discovering strength in moments of uncertainty and learning to stand on your own. Portraying her evolution from vulnerability to independence has been challenging and deeply rewarding. My first collaboration with Netflix makes it even more special, and I’m grateful that Shenba has connected with her boundaries around the world.”
Written and directed by Ra Karthik (who made Nitham Oru Vaanam), Made In Korea also stars South Korean actors Park Hye Jin and No Ho Jin. Produced by Rise East Entertainment, the film premieres March 12 on Netflix.
