Vellayil in Kozhikode is set to get a facelift through two ₹5 crore development projects. ₹3 crore has been allocated for the Avikkal Thodu development project, while ₹2 crore has been allocated by the state government for the Vellayil fishing harbor renovation project.
Chief Minister VD Satheesan recently announced the allocation of funds in his reply to the presentation of the Budget 2026-2027. Avikkal Thodu, an urban canal in the city, carries rainwater but has become heavily polluted with untreated sewage and solid waste from surrounding areas. Deteriorating water quality has raised public health and environmental concerns among residents.
Assuring that the projects will be started at the earliest, Kozhikode North MLA K. Jayanth said, “The canal will be properly covered with slabs. The vacant space next to it will be developed into a recreational area.”
He added that thousands of fishermen depend on the Vellayil fishing port. “Currently, the port is outdated and poorly equipped, lacking basic facilities. The renovated port will have all basic facilities, including toilets,” he said. Regarding funding, he said, “If the allocated funds prove insufficient, additional funds may be sourced from the MLA fund.”
“The breakwater and jetty of the port will be expanded and a separate building will be constructed for storage. Basic facilities like drinking water will be provided at the port,” said Vellayil division councilor Soufiya NP.
Welcoming the project, AP Abdullakutty, president, Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the funds should be used strategically to transform the port into a world-class modern facility. The port should be equipped with basic infrastructure, proper sanitation and better marketing and sales facilities.
He also suggested considering the scope of establishing a children’s fisheries museum, which could increase the tourism potential of the area.
“The renovation of Lions Park is being done by the Kozhikode Corporation and is in its final stages. Together, these improvements will significantly transform the beach area to the benefit of the residents,” added Jayanth.
