Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has highlighted the key tactical battle ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final, pointing to the clash between India captain Suryakumar Yadav and England leg-spinner Adil Rashid as one of the crucial matches when India take on England in Mumbai on March 5.
India head into the semi-finals at the Wankhede Stadium after getting through the tricky Super 8 stage. They suffered a defeat against South Africa but bounced back strongly with must-win victories over Zimbabwe and the West Indies to secure a place in the last four.
England, led by Harry Brooke, come in with momentum after an unbeaten Super 8 campaign in Sri Lanka. Their only loss in the tournament came earlier at the Wankhede Stadium against West Indies.
Ashwin hinted on his YouTube channel that the battle between Suryakumar and Rashid could shape the direction of the semi-final.
“If we can chase 195 against West Indies, we can do it against England. As such, their bowling is nothing special,” Ashwin said.
“We’re playing in India, we’re playing at the Wankhede, our favorite ground, so we have a head start. But having a head start doesn’t mean we’re going to win. No excuse will work, your batting, bowling and fielding have to be on point. It’s not going to work if they say ‘if we did it’. We just need a bit of luck.”
The Indian batting faced challenges against spin at times during the tournament. Opposition teams often used off-spin during the Powerplay to disrupt India’s top order and take advantage of the presence of several left-handers in the lineup.
SURYAKUMAR VS ADIL RASHID: KEY BATTLE IN MUMBAI
Ashwin believes that the match between Suryakumar and Rashid could be the deciding moment in the semi-finals, given the England spinner’s strong form in the tournament.
Rashid has been England’s most consistent bowler in the competition so far. In seven matches, the leg-spinner took 11 wickets while conceding 209 runs from 26.4 overs at an economy rate of 7.83.
Suryakumar, meanwhile, was one of India’s key artists with the bat. The Indian captain has scored 231 runs in seven matches at an average of 38.50 and a strike rate of 135.88.
Against spin, Suryakumar often relies on sweep and slog-sweep variations to disrupt the bowler’s rhythm, although these strokes have produced mixed results during the tournament.
His familiarity with the Wankhede surface could prove valuable in the semi-finals. Having played several seasons on the pitch with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, Suryakumar understands the pace and bounce the pitch has to offer.
Earlier in the tournament at the same venue, Suryakumar played a crucial counter-attack against the United States. On a slightly two-tiered surface that slowed down after the first wickets, he helped India recover to reach 161 – a total that eventually secured a 29-run victory.
Interestingly, the conditions at the Wankhede during this World Cup offered help to both pace and spin bowlers.
Historically, all T20 matches at the ground have been dominated by pacers with 1,635 wickets compared to 781 by spinners. In this tournament, however, the gap narrowed significantly.
The spinners took 40 wickets at an average of 24.65 with an economy of 8.01, while the pacers took 43 wickets at an average of 27 and an economy of 9.10.
With a World Cup final on the line, Ashwin believes individual matches like Suryakumar against Rashid could end up shaping the outcome of the semi-final in Mumbai.
