The death of a 52-year-old mechanic, initially suspected of natural causes, has been turned into a case of murder after the Viveknagar police unearthed evidence of an assault linked to a dispute over the eviction of a rented house.
The late Inayath Pasha lived alone on the ground floor of a building in Austin Town belonging to his sister. A two-wheeler mechanic by profession, he had a partial disability of his left leg from birth due to polio.
On March 1, around 6:45 p.m., his son Syed Mohammed Ali visited the house and found his father lying motionless on the cot. Earlier, at about 4:45 p.m., Pasha’s sister and her son allegedly went to serve food and noticed him lying inside the house. He was unresponsive when they tried to wake him up.
Based on the initial suggestion, the police registered a report of unnatural death and started an investigation.
However, during the course of the investigation, suspicions arose regarding the circumstances of the death. After a detailed investigation and a new complaint by a relative, the police converted the case to a homicide investigation.
The accused, identified as Masoor Ahmed, 22, an employee of a private firm and nephew of the deceased, was taken in for questioning. During the interrogation, he allegedly admitted that he had repeatedly asked Pasha to clean out the rented house. On March 1, he again went to the tenant’s house and asked him to vacate. An argument ensued after Pasha allegedly refused and abused him.
Police said that during the argument, Ahmed hit Pasha with his hands on the face, eyes, chest and ribs, which led to his death on the spot. He then allegedly tried to portray the incident as a natural death.
Investigators said the murder was committed after an argument over clearing the house and that the accused tried to mislead the authorities by projecting it as a case of sudden death. The accused has been arrested and further investigation is underway.
