APCC president YS Sharmila on Wednesday condemned the “brutal action of TDP-led coalition party against Anganwadi workers in the state”.
In a post on X, she condemned “midnight arrests” and wondered if it was wrong to stage a peaceful protest to achieve legitimate demands.
“Will they put shackles on those who ask for their rights?” she asked, arguing that arresting women in this manner is an inhumane act. She said TDP made promises before the elections but when asked about them, the answer was jail.
Asserting that the Anganwadi workers’ demands were legitimate, Ms Sharmila said they should be paid a minimum wage of ₹26,000. “Guidelines for implementation of gratuity must be issued. As many as 1,810 mini centers should be upgraded to main centers, authorities should allow them paid medical leave, backlog vacancies should be filled and their other demands should be addressed,” she said.
The Congress leader demanded that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu honor his assurances given to the anganwad workers during their 42-day strike in December 2023 when he was in the opposition and said the Congress party would extend its full support to the anganwad workers’ movement to protect their rights.
