South Africa’s batting collapse in the 2026 FIFA World Cup T20 semi-final against New Zealand sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with fans quick to point out that the Proteas once again failed to deliver when it mattered most.

After going through the tournament unbeaten, many tipped this Proteas side as favorites to go all the way. But a familiar story unfolded at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens on Wednesday as New Zealand dismantled their batting line-up to rile the fans.
Fans are venting their frustration on X
The reaction to X was swift and merciless. One fan summed up the mood perfectly, writing that South Africa would not only not lose, but would pull off a masterpiece of self-destruction. Others were more sympathetic, insisting that the Proteas would not give up without a fight.
With the match still evenly poised, one fan suggested that a total of 160 on this pitch would be competitive. Another struck a bullish tone, arguing that if South Africa could defend their total in Kolkata, they would be worthy champions.
However, as the innings progressed, optimism was lacking.
Others were already looking beyond the semi-finals altogether. Some fans doubted whether a repeat of the 2024 final between India and South Africa was even possible, with results elsewhere leaving the second semi-final wide open.
Another day, another collapse
On the field, the collapse was difficult for Proteas supporters to watch. Cole McConchie set the tone early as he struck twice in his opening over to remove Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton in quick succession. South Africa was in trouble before it even found its footing.
It got worse from there. Aiden Markram and David Miller fell to Rachin Ravindra to leave the Proteas in a power play. Dewald Brevis, who briefly looked capable of holding the ship, was also dismissed before he could make a significant contribution.
Tristan Stubbs and Marco Jansen offered much needed resistance. The pair put on a 73-run partnership that gave South Africa hope of a competitive total. But Stubbs was cleaned up by a sharp Lockie Ferguson yorker with two overs remaining, ending that partnership and with it South Africa’s best chance of recovery.
South Africa have never beaten New Zealand in an ICC knockout match. Based on this evidence, it appears that the unwanted entry will remain intact.
