The Ernakulam Town South police have launched an investigation into an alleged cyber scam in which a 72-year-old man was duped of ₹81 crore.
The fraudsters contacted the complainant, a resident of Elamkulam, through WhatsApp and convinced him to invest the amount through a fake trading platform, which police said promised higher returns.
The accused paid the money in multiple transactions between November 6 and December 5, 2025, from two of his bank accounts. He tipped off the police when he realized he had been duped after the accused failed to pay him the promised returns or the amount invested. A case was registered on Monday under Section 316 (2) and 318 (4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for the offense of breach of trust and cheating.
