Podcaster Andrew “Menners” Menczel has spoken out about his heated on-air clash with former Australian tennis player Stuart MacGill on the Cricket Unfiltered podcast, saying the incident crossed a line. Menczel said the taped exchange felt like an attempt at bullying.
The confrontation unfolded during a discussion about the treatment of David Warner’s wife Candice during Australia’s tour of South Africa in 2018. In response after the episode went viral, Menczel commented on the incident and detailed what happened after the microphones were turned off.
“The show ends and then he leaves. He’s yelling at me, saying the ‘C’ word. Get out the door and I’m just saying I’m going to play the episode,” Menczel said.
“There’s no way I could sit on that, other than him yelling at me to release the episode. And you’d think the way he went on, he’d be begging me not to release it.”
Menczel also revealed that MacGill wanted a specific part of the discussion removed from the podcast.
“Then he told me to shout the name of Sonny Bill Williams because no one can hear the ex-footballer’s name. What an absolute muppet he is.”
“Then he’ll leave, I’ll let it go and look, I’ve been fine. I don’t mind being called that. I’m no shrinking violet.”
The podcaster said he wasn’t personally shaken by the insults, but felt the tone of the exchange reflected poorly.
“Anyone who’s listened to this show knows I can punch. I can punch. People have checked my sanity with me. I’m fine.”
“One thing I didn’t like about it though is the bullying. His trying to bully me or anybody because it’s not good to listen to. It’s not good to watch, it doesn’t set a good example.”
“So I find it quite burdensome. I don’t mind arguing with someone and I tried to take their point of view on the show.”
“But he wasn’t having any of that and he had this meltdown that was immature and it was bullying. It wasn’t arguments, it wasn’t fun to listen to.”
A tense moment occurred during a discussion about the abuse Candice Warner faced during the 2018 Test tour of South Africa, when sections of the crowd wore Sonny Bill Williams masks. Menczel criticized this behavior as crossing the line, but MacGill objected to returning to the subject, leading to a heated argument that quickly turned into personal insults.
WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN MACGILL AND MENZEL
An argument erupted when Menczel called the crowd’s taunts directed at Candice Warner unacceptable and “over the line”. MacGill strongly disagreed with the incident being reviewed and accused his co-host of prolonging the controversy by discussing it again.
The exchange quickly escalated, with MacGill interrupting Menzel and calling him a “pig-headed morals” and “freaking idiot” during the segment. He also warned that if any part of the discussion was edited it would end their working relationship and at one stage even suggested he might “jump the mic”.
The confrontation stunned listeners and the episode quickly gained traction online, with many criticizing MacGill’s aggressive behavior during the heated debate.
