Senior Pakistan cricket selector Aleem Dar has reportedly resigned from his role in the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) national selection committee following a disappointing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.
Geo Super reported that Dar stepped down amid growing frustration with the significant authority exercised by head coach Mike Hesson in matters of selection, as well as what he perceived as a lack of opposition or intervention from fellow selector Aaqib Javed after Pakistan failed to reach the semi-finals.
Dar, a former elite ICC umpire who joined the selection committee in October 2024submitted his resignation to PCB officials after the team failed to qualify for the semi-finals, marking the first major administrative fallout from an early exit from the World Cup.
Sources suggested that the 57-year-old had grown increasingly frustrated with internal selection disputes, particularly disagreements over the inclusion of senior players such as Babar Azam, Shadab Khan and Usman Khan, whose recent performances had reportedly come under scrutiny. Reports further indicate that Dar was unhappy with the extent of authority Hesson exercised over final selection decisions, which became a key contributing factor to his resignation.
Dar’s exit leaves a selection panel comprising Aaqib Javed and Asad Shafiq along with data analyst Usman Hashmi as the PCB evaluates its next steps in revamping the team’s management structure.
PCB FINES PAKISTAN CRICKETERS
PCB meanwhile imposed a financial penalty on the national team after a disappointing exit from the World Cup. According to The Express Tribune, each member of the team will be fined PKR 5 million (approximately Rs 16 million) for failing to meet performance expectations.
The move, reportedly led by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, signals a tougher approach to accountability after a string of underwhelming performances by the ICC.
Reports suggest that the decision was informally finalized during the group stage, especially after Pakistan’s high-profile defeat to India in Colombo, which left Naqvi visibly displeased.
Pakistan endured a disappointing World Cup campaign. They played four matches in the group stage, winning two and losing two, including a heavy defeat to India in Colombo. However, they managed to revive their campaign with a crucial win over Namibia to stay in contention for qualification.
Despite narrowly advancing to the Super 8 stage, Pakistan failed to build momentum. They lost two of their three matches in the second round, suffering defeats to New Zealand and England. With just one win in the Super 8, Pakistan finished out of the semi-final positions, bringing an inconsistent and underwhelming campaign to a premature end.
