On Sunday (March 1, 2026), the sands of Marina Beach reverberated with the resonant notes of the thavilu – a classical percussion instrument – along with the earthy rhythms of the magudam and mantham, folk instruments that traditionally accompany Kaniyaan Koothu, and the pulsating rhythms of the thappu melam.
The unique ensemble was organized by the Tamil Nadu government’s Department of Arts and Culture to commemorate Chennai’s declaration as a City of Music by UNESCO. The two-day musical events were held at Valluvar Kottam and Marina.
