In a major step towards safer wildlife management, Vice President (VP) CP Radhakrishnan on Sunday launched a drone-based remote-controlled tranquilisation system designed to tranquilize rogue elephants and dangerous wild animals from a safe distance.
An innovative system designed by veterinary expert Dr. by PB Giridas, was presented at a function at Devamatha School in Thrissur. Named Gajasthram, the project is financially supported by the Lakshmi Charitable Trust, chaired by Thrissur MP and Union Minister Suresh Gopi.
The drone is equipped with a stun gun, tranquilizer syringe and medication, all remotely controlled. The system is capable of operating at a distance of up to 500 meters and provides increased safety for wildlife professionals, assisting personnel and the public during high-risk operations.
GPS system
The device is integrated with a mobile GPS system and camera, allowing precise targeting and real-time tracking. Officials said the technology will be particularly effective in densely forested areas and geographically challenging terrains where wildlife control is difficult.
Dr. Giridas, a member of the Central Elephant Care and Management Committee and an expert on elephant darts, has been actively involved in tranquilization operations for nearly three decades.
Mr. Gopi expressed the belief that the system would be of great benefit to forest department experts and government elephant team personnel involved in wildlife control operations.
