West Indies captain Shai Hope jumps at a reporter after his team’s defeat to India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Sunday, March 1 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. India defeated the West Indies cricket team by five wickets in the final match of the Super 8 tournament to qualify for the semi-finals. It was a memorable outing for the West Indies skipper who struggled with the bat, scoring 32 off 33 deliveries before his stumps were rocked by Varun Chakravarthy.
After his labored knock, Hope was asked about the pace of his innings and whether he took responsibility for his side falling short of what on the surface was seen as an ideal total. The West Indies captain initially admitted he could have stepped up earlier, but when pressed again on the same issue, reacted sharply and said he would take the blame.
T20 World Cup: India vs West Indies Update
“Y’all make me laugh, man. Yeah, I’ll take the blame if that’s what you want me to say. I should have batted a lot faster. That’s what you wanted me to say. But in situations like this, when you’re struggling, everybody’s struggling. But like I said, I don’t think I’ve been batting badly. I’ve just been trying to hit the fielders a little bit more and a little bit more. deeper into the innings and facing most of the threat of the spin in the middle, but I didn’t break up today. But yes, I take the blame, so you want to say that,” Hope said at the post-match press conference.
India qualify for the semi-finals
Hope started his innings cautiously, scoring just two runs off his first eight balls before hitting Hardik Pandya for a six followed by a boundary to get things moving. However, he tried to turn the strike against the spinners and was eventually bowled by Chakravarthy.
Hope added 68 runs from 53 balls for the first wicket with Roston Chase (40 off 25). West Indies eventually posted 195/4 in their allotted 20 overs. However, the total amount turned out to be insufficient Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 97 off 50 balls helped India chase down the daunting target in 19.2 overs and book their place in the semi-finals.
