Japan frustrated Brazil for long after taking a deserved lead through Sano in the first half. Their organized defense kept Carlo Ancelotti’s side at bay until Casemiro headed home an equalizer after the break.
As extra time approached, Martinelli headed in at the far post in the fifth minute of stoppage time to complete Brazil’s comeback and end Japan’s hopes of a first World Cup round of 16.
The heartbreaking defeat means Japan’s wait for a first-ever World Cup knockout victory continues. Still, the post-match scenes of Moriyasu and his players appreciating their supporters reflected the values that have long defined Japanese soccer, and their humility and acceptance of defeat earned admiration far beyond the final score.
