Amid a raging political battle between Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy over the acquisition of land for the Bidadi township project, a group of Hassan farmers on Monday (June 29) accused Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Revanna, brother of Mr. Kumaraswamy, of stopping compensation to farmers whose land was acquired in Hassan.

Farmers from seven villages in Hassan, where the land was notified for the Indian Institute of Technology, met the Chief Minister here and accused Mr. Revanna of harassing the farmers after the land acquisition process began. The farmers’ delegation was led by Arasikere Congress legislator Shivlinge Gowda and Shreyas Patel, Congress MP from Hassan.

According to a release from the chief minister’s office, the farmers have sought compensation as per the court orders and said that the sites in lieu of land have not been allotted yet. Farmers claimed that although an acre is now worth several crores, ₹25 crore was offered as compensation. They accused Mr. Revanna of interfering with the administration to stop the compensation process. They also alleged that attempts are being made to acquire land for the HD Devegowda Education Trust.

The Chief Minister assured the delegation that the government would be sympathetic to the farmers and would be happiest if the farmers were given more money. “I will not serve one justice to Bidadi farmers and another to Hassan farmers.
