All flights from Calicut International Airport to destinations in the Persian Gulf were canceled on Saturday afternoon following the escalation of tensions in the region over the joint US-Israeli attack on Iran.
Among the canceled flights were Air India Express, IndiGo, SpiceJet and Oman Air flights.
Hundreds of passengers preparing to fly to destinations in the Persian Gulf were surprised when Gulf countries closed their airspace after Iran retaliated against US targets in the Persian Gulf.
Airport sources said the cancellation of flights to destinations such as Kuwait, Dubai, Doha, Bahrain and Riyadh was part of an overall decision to save passengers and airlines from getting involved in the tensions.
Several arrivals from West Asia were also delayed. They included Air India Express IX374 from Bahrain. Connections from Dubai and Jeddah were also delayed.
Among the cancellations were Air India Express IX346 to Dubai, scheduled for 14:40, as well as IndiGo services to Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi.
Calicut International Airport handles 126 flights daily on 22 routes to eight countries. Saturday’s schedule featured just 22 departures and nine arrivals, with the Gulf routes bearing the brunt of the disruption.
