Indian women qualify for LA28 Olympics despite exiting World Cup, but men’s team not yet; here’s why

India’s Shafali Verma hits a boundary during the Women’s T20 World Cup cricket match between Australia and India at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, Sunday, June 28 (PTI) India’s campaign at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 ended with yet another group stage exit, but Harmanpreet Kaur’s side still had a lot to take away from the tournament. Despite losing to Australia by six wickets in their final Group A match and missing out on the semi-finals, India secured a place in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics through the ICC qualification system. The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday announced the qualification route for cricket’s return to the Olympics after 128 years. The Los Angeles 2028 men’s and women’s T20 competitions will have six teams each. India qualified as the highest ranked team from Asia for the Women’s T20 World Cup. Although Harmanpreet Kaur’s team did not reach the knockout stage, they finished ahead of all other Asian teams in the tournament, earning them the continent’s only automatic spot at the Olympics.Six teams will compete in each of the men’s and women’s events.“The ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has confirmed the first participants for the LA28, with Australia, Great Britain (via England), India and South Africa qualifying by virtue of being the highest-placed eligible finalists from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania. These places have been limited to one per continent,” the ICC said in a statement on Monday. The fifth spot in both the women’s and men’s competition could go to the hosts USA, provided they move into the top 15 of the ICC T20I rankings anytime between June 30 and December 31, 2026. If the USA does not reach this ranking, the spot will go to the highest ranked unqualified team in the ICC Women’s of March T227I rankings. In the men’s competition, if the USA does not meet the required ranking criteria, the fifth automatic qualification spot will be awarded to the next highest-ranked team from any continent that has not yet qualified by December 31, 2026.The sixth and final Olympic berths in both men’s and women’s events will be decided through the first ICC Olympic tournament to be held in 2027.The ICC also explained how the qualifiers will work for the West Indies. Since the West Indies represent several Caribbean nations as one ICC member and are not recognized as one National Olympic Committee (NOC) by the IOC, they cannot compete in the Olympics or receive a direct Olympic quota. However, if a West Indies men’s or women’s team finishes among the eight highest-placed non-qualified teams by 31 December 2026, a separate qualifying tournament will be held in the Caribbean to decide which National Olympic Committee from the region will represent the Caribbean at the ICC Olympic Qualifiers.

What are the qualification criteria for the men’s category?

The USA are eligible for an automatic place as hosts, but only if they break into the top 15 of the ICC Men’s T20I rankings anytime between June 30 and December 31, 2026.The remaining automatic places will go to the highest-placed eligible teams from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania in the ICC Men’s T20I rankings on 31 December 2026, with only one team from each continent qualifying directly. The sixth and final spot will be decided through the 2027 ICC Olympics Qualifier, an eight-team tournament that will determine the final team to qualify for the Los Angeles Games.
