Three workers fainted after allegedly inhaling poisonous gas from the leather cleaning chamber of a private tannery in Tirupattur’s Vaniyambadi town on Kutcheri Road on Friday.
Police said the affected workers were identified as B. Perumal, 55, S. Munir, 52, K. Nagaraj, 58, all residents of Vaniyambadi town.
Initial investigations revealed that the trio, along with several workers, loaded raw hides into a hot steam chemical chamber at the unit on Thursday.
After returning to work on Friday, police said Perumal, Munir and Nagaraj along with their associates opened the leather chamber in the tannery to remove the cleaned raw hide. The trio immediately collapsed in place near the chamber. The incident happened around nine o’clock in the morning
Other employees of the unit alerted Mohammed Iqbal (58), a tannery owner, who rushed to the spot. Police said the fainted workers were taken to the Taluk Government Hospital in Vaniyambadi town, where doctors said the trio was recovering.
Acting on the alert, the Vaniyambadi city police registered a Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) case under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and provisions of the Manual Scavengers Prohibition and Rehabilitation Act, 2013. Investigation is on.
