A 30-year-old woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances near a farm in Siddapura in Varthur police station limits on Wednesday morning. Police suspect that the victim was strangled.
The deceased was identified as Sonali Khatun (30), a native of Murshidabad, West Bengal. She worked as a housekeeper for a private company in Brookfield.
Her husband Babu Shek (33) is employed as a construction worker in the city. The couple moved to Bengaluru about a year ago in search of job opportunities. They lived with their son (14), daughter (8) and Sonali’s mother, Sayra (60).
According to police and family members, Sonali returned home from work around 7:30 pm on Wednesday. She told her husband that she had left her cell phone at her workplace in Brookfield and left the house to return the phone, taking her husband’s cell phone with her. However, she did not return home afterwards. When family members tried to contact her, the cell phone reportedly rang once before turning off. Despite efforts to track her down overnight, there was no information on her whereabouts.
On Thursday, when the police were conducting an investigation in the area following information about a body found near an agricultural land in Siddapur, the family identified the body as Sonali’s. Based on preliminary observations, the police suspect strangulation. A case of murder has been registered at Varthur police station.
