The Penn Social cocktail bar in Washington DC is in the spotlight for offering unlimited alcohol to its customers during US President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address. In an innovative move to gain popularity and attract customers, a pub has announced it will offer free beer until Donald Trump delivers his first insult.
Any strike aimed at an “individual, group of people or country” would immediately result in the termination of the free lager, according to the rules of the event. Located about a mile from where the State of the Union was held, this pub drew crowds by insisting on SOTU watches with free beers.
On February 24, Donald Trump set a record for the longest SOTU address. Trump was about 45 minutes into his speech when the first strike occurred, The Washington Post reported.
Announcing the unique event, Penn Social wrote in an Instagram post: “Free beer until first offense (yes, we’re on a watch) 21+ only, while supplies last, staff will call.”
In addition to this publicity stunt, organizers have promised to offer a $250 gift card to those who complete a “Likelihood Questionnaire” and submit it by 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, provided the participant is present 45 minutes before the SOTU speech.
What is a State of the Union address?
The State of the Union Address is an important speech delivered annually by the President of the United States. Held at the beginning of most calendar years, it focuses on the national budget, economy, news, agenda, progress, achievements, and the president’s priorities and legislative proposals.
According to a report by The Washington Post, Trump took 17 minutes and 10 seconds to utter the insult during his first address to Congress in 2017.
Some highlights from Trump’s SOTU address
In his opening remarks, Donald Trump presented the gold medal to the victorious US men’s Olympic hockey team after Sunday’s historic win over Canada. He announced that the team’s goaltender Connor Hellebuyck will be awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor — the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He also revealed that the women’s ice hockey team that beat Canada to win gold was invited to the White House.
Addressing Democrats in Congress, Trump said, “You should be ashamed of yourself for not standing up.” SOTU’s speech was full of patriotism and indicated that the past year had been “a turning point for the ages”.
Stressing that an interagency task force led by JD Vance would launch a “war on fraud,” Trump said, “He will, and if we can find enough of these frauds, we will actually have a balanced budget. He made the remarks in connection with a fraud scandal in Minnesota that involved many residents of Somali descent, as he took aim at Gov. Tim Walz.
