The Local Government Department (LSGD) has entered into an agreement to set up a regional sanitary waste incinerator in Ernakulam.
It is among four such facilities launched to address gaps in sanitary waste management. The government had earlier asked the Kochi Corporation to allot one acre in Brahmapuram for setting up the plant. Apart from Ernakulam, the facility at Brahmapuram will serve Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki districts.
Three more plants will come up in Kollam, Palakkad and Kannur. Agreements to implement these projects have been fulfilled, LSGD said in a report submitted to the main committee of the National Green Tribunal on measures taken for solid and liquid waste management.
As per the project guidelines, Clean Kerala Company Limited will set up each of the proposed factories on a plot of 50 cents under an appropriate public private partnership model. Each of the facilities will have the capacity to process 20 tons of sanitary waste per day. LSGD said sanitary waste was collected separately at source and on demand basis. It is disposed of using two-chamber incinerators.
In addition to the two-chamber sanitary incinerators set up at the local level and the Kerala Enviro Infrastructure Limited’s joint biomedical waste management facility at Ambalamed, the process of setting up four sanitary waste treatment facilities at the regional level has been initiated.
The one acre site at Brahmapuram is located near the existing incinerator. It was identified in the waste management master plan approved by the company’s board earlier. The LSGD directed the Corporation Secretary to take necessary steps to demarcate and transfer land for the project in consultation with Suchitwa Mission and Clean Kerala Company Limited.
