The Academic Council of Kerala University has approved a new regulation that allows undergraduate students to complete a second degree at the same time as their regular studies.
The decision was taken at a meeting on Tuesday presided over by the Vice-Chancellor-in-Charge Mohanan Kunnummal. The university has imposed restrictions on enrollment in more than one course at the same time. Thanks to the reform, students studying in a regular degree program can simultaneously enroll in a distance learning or online course, allowing them to earn two degrees at the same time.
Sources point out that this provision is in line with a practice long used by several foreign universities. The University Grants Commission has also allowed higher education institutions to allow parallel courses alongside regular studies based on the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework.
In another major step, the Academic Council has also given its approval for the appointment of eminent personalities, including eminent writers, scientists, engineers and management experts, as ‘Professors of Practice’ in various teaching departments of the University. The initiative is aimed at enhancing industry-academia collaboration and provides students with hands-on exposure and expertise.
