Ruby Jain and Harsh — a Delhi-based couple accused of racially abusing three women from Arunachal Pradesh in the capital’s Malviya Nagar area — have been sent to 14-day judicial custody. The couple was arrested and produced before the next Sessions Judge Samar Vishal on Wednesday, February 25. They were later remanded in judicial custody until March 11.
The case came to light after a video in which Ruby and Harsh Jain allegedly hurled racial slurs at three of their neighbors from the northeast went viral. The dispute was reportedly over repairs at their rented accommodation on 20 February. A case has been registered at Malviya Nagar police station.
The police have filed an FIR against the arrested woman under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
They said the case was initially registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section, citing charges of criminal intimidation, insulting the modesty of women and promoting enmity between groups.
“The investigation has now been handed over to an ACP officer after the addition of the SC-ST Act and is being closely monitored by senior officials,” the police said in a statement.
Delhi CM Rekha Gupta reacts
When the video went viral, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta condemned the incident and said she would meet the three girls.
On X, she wrote: “I strongly condemn the incident that happened to our North East sisters and I stand firmly with them. The dignity, respect and safety of every citizen is paramount here. I will meet them personally.”
Rekha Gupta added, “Police is taking legal action with full responsibility and we will ensure that strictest possible action is taken against the culprits. Harassment, discrimination or humiliation of any daughter will not be tolerated at any cost. We are all one and the safety of every daughter is our highest responsibility.”
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu also reacted to the Malviya Nagar viral video, saying that atrocities on the people of the Northeast will not be tolerated and warning that they will take strong action against the accused. “I have personally spoken to the police and watched the action. An arrest has been made and strict legal action will be initiated. We will teach a lesson to ensure that no one from the North East is ill-treated,” said Kiren Rijiju.
Pema Khandu said he had spoken to the Delhi Police Commissioner and demanded swift and strict action.
“Kompik is in touch with me personally. The accused will be dealt with according to the law. We stand firmly behind our three sisters and their safety, dignity and justice remain our highest priority,” the Chief Minister said.
