Fishermen from 12 villages starting from Ayodhya Kuppam in Triplicane to Srinivasapuram in Santhome will stage a human chain on the evening of March 2, urging the government to abandon the plan to include the Marina Loop Road and another beach in the proposed expansion of the Blue Flag scheme. They are also against the cable car coming to the Marina and the proposed removal of shops from the Marina and Loop Road.
Representatives of settlements including Ayodhya Kuppam, Matankuppam, Nochikuppam and Srinivasapuram met on Tuesday to discuss the problems of urban fishing settlements. “We have already given up space for this proposal. We have moved our boats. But when the bamboo fences were put up in the little space we had, we lost it and told them to remove the stuff, which they did after some pressure. We have 30 boats and 10 catamarans. Already fishing near the coast is badly affected by sewage and garbage,” said Murugan of Kuppline Ayodhya. The boat parking space belonging to Ayodhya Kuppam and Matankuppam is affected by the current expansion of the blue flag beach.
