India opener Abhishek Sharma maintained his position at the top of the ICC Men’s T20I batting rankings despite a lean run in the ongoing T20 World Cup, while wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan broke into the top five in the latest update released by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Abhishek endured a terrible stretch with the bat in the marquee tournament, but his pre-tournament performances ensured he retained the top spot. He continues to enjoy a comfortable 62-point lead over England’s Phil Salt, underscoring the consistency that has taken him to the top. Pakistan’s spinner Sahibzada Farhan, currently the tournament’s top run-scorer, climbed two places to third and achieved a career-best ranking after a prolific run in the group stage.
Kishan proved to be one of the biggest movers among the top batsmen as he took three wickets in the fifth over. The left-hander’s rise to the top five caps a sustained run of strong performances in the shortest format and further strengthens India’s presence in the upper echelons of the rankings. South Africa’s Dewald Brevis has moved up 10 places to ninth after an impressive campaign so far, while Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran (13), West Indies captain Shai Hope (14) and England captain Harry Brook (18) have also moved up significantly in the updated list.
In the all-rounders’ rankings, Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza returned to the No.1 position after playing a crucial role in guiding his team to the Super Eights. Raza edged out Pakistan’s Saim Ayub in what turned out to be a hotly contested race for the top spot. India’s Shivam Dube moved up two places to seventh after consistent contributions and Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi climbed to eighth to remain among the format’s leading all-rounders.
India also continued to feature prominently in the bowling rankings. Varun Chakravarthy retained his No.1 ranking despite a costly game against South Africa in the World Cup, with his overall work keeping him ahead. South African pacer Corbin Bosch recorded one of the most dramatic jumps in the latest update, climbing 21 places to third after excellent performances that included 3 wickets against the UAE and figures of 2 for 12 against India.
Further down the rankings, West Indies quick Matthew Forde moved up to seventh and India’s leading wicket-taker Jasprit Bumrah moved up to eighth, reflecting their influence in recent matches. South African Marco Jansen, West Indies player Gudakesh Motie and England left-armer Liam Dawson have also enjoyed upswings after productive weeks in the tournament.
