A total of 36,831 houses have been completed across Kozhikode district under LIFE (Lifelihood Inclusion and Financial Empowerment) mission, a comprehensive plan to provide housing to the landless and homeless people in the state.
“Since the launch of the initiative in 2016, the project has been launched in several phases to meet the housing needs of various demographic groups across the region. In its initial phase, the mission focused on reviving stalled projects, resulting in the completion of 6,484 houses that previously remained unfinished under older projects,” said a press release on Tuesday.
In the second phase of the mission, 5,150 beneficiaries who owned their own land received the financial assistance needed to complete their houses. This was followed by a third phase aimed specifically at the landless, which provided land and housing to 714 people.
Further progress was achieved through various departmental initiatives where the SC, ST and Fisheries Departments supervised the completion of 2,192 houses while another 2,276 houses were constructed for priority beneficiaries on the specialized list, the report said.
The scope of the project was significantly expanded after an extensive survey launched in 2020. After strict official verification, the final list containing 20,849 beneficiaries was published in 2022. From this list, 7,945 houses were completed under grama panchayats, while 8,930 houses were constructed in urban municipalities through the Life-PMAY scheme. In addition, the PMAY-G category enabled the completion of 2,384 houses in rural areas.
The effort was also closely linked to the extreme poverty program. As part of the initiative, 584 landowners got housing and 172 out of 330 landless and homeless beneficiaries were provided with houses.
“Public participation also played a vital role through the ‘Manassodithiri Mannu’ campaign which secured 100.75 cents of donated land for the cause. Looking ahead, the construction of Poolakkode Life Housing Complex in Chathamangalam grama panchayat, a project designed to provide modern resettlement for 44 families,” the report said.
