Italian cricket has been embroiled in controversy just days after its historic appearance at the Under-20 Men’s World Cup. A senior Italian Cricket Federation official has been investigated and suspended following allegations of sexual assault, according to a Sky Sports report.
The person is accused of inappropriately touching a member of the Italian women’s national team, with a complaint reportedly made to police last year.
This development cast a shadow over what was a landmark for Italian cricket on the world stage. The federation has acknowledged the matter and said it will fully cooperate with the relevant judicial authorities while investigations continue.
“The Italian Cricket Federation reiterates that its conduct is governed by the principles of fairness, transparency and protection of its registered members, as well as the ethical and civil standards that underpin the sporting system,” FCRI said in a statement.
“Therefore, the federation leaves it to the competent judicial authorities to make a decision on the matter.”
HOW DID ITALY DO IN THE T20 WORLD CUP?
Italy made their first appearance at the 2026 U20 Men’s World Cup and won many admirers with their spirited performances. They competed without injured captain Wayne Madsen, who was ruled out after dislocating his shoulder in the opening game. Despite the setback, Italy’s Azzurri put up a remarkable fight against the likes of Nepal, England and Scotland.
Italy started with a 73-run defeat of Scotland, with Ben Manenti leading the way with 52. They then secured their first ever T20 World Cup victory, a 10-wicket thrashing of Nepal at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The win was powered by unbeaten half-centuries from Anthony Mosca and Justin Mosca along with impressive spells from Crishan Kalugamage and Manenti.
Against England, Italy posted 178 with Manenti hitting 60 off 25 balls. They concluded their campaign with a 42-run loss to the West Indies, where Manenti again contributed with bat and ball. Following his outstanding performances, Manenti jumped 160 places to 20th in the latest ICC all-rounder rankings.
Italy finished with one win from four games, marking a memorable debut on the world stage.
