The Lakshadweep administration has submitted to the Kerala High Court that its proposal to declare every Wednesday as ‘Vehicle Free Day’ in the Union Territory will not be implemented till the end of the Ramzan season.
This happened following an application filed in court by a lawyer from Kalpeni seeking a temporary stay on the proposal, which was to be implemented from February 25. As part of this regulation, only vehicles used by people with disabilities and vehicles used for security and medical services were exempted from the regulation, which is said to be aimed at reducing pollution and promoting public health through walking and cycling.
The petitioner argued in the High Court that the order would impact on the freedom of movement of persons as well as his professional duties which require frequent travel to Kerala. People, including patients, who commute between the islands and from the islands to the mainland on ships, as well as the transportation of essential goods from ship terminals, could be affected, he said.
The hearing on the objection was adjourned until March 16.
