Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit India, Australia and Japan from February 26 to March 7, 2026 to diversify foreign trade and attract new international investment.
According to a statement issued by the Canadian prime minister on Monday, February 23, the visit seeks to “unlock new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses in trade, energy, technology and defence. Through these visits by three of Canada’s strongest Indo-Pacific partners, the prime minister will deepen the regional ties that are critical to our security and prosperity.”
Carney’s visit comes amid his efforts to diversify Canada’s alliances outside of the U.S., its primary trading partner. He received a rare standing ovation at the World Economic Forum in Davos last month after he said the old rules-based order was over and called on middle powers such as Canada to form coalitions to create a fairer and more resilient global system.
“In a changing world, we are investing in our strength, diversifying our business and cultivating a dense network of new connections around the world to build Canada strong,” the report said.
Here’s the itinerary for Carney’s planned visit –
India
Prime Minister Carney will first visit Mumbai before traveling to New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Their discussions will focus on strengthening and expanding Canada-India relations through new, ambitious cooperation in trade, energy, technology, artificial intelligence (AI), talent, culture and defence. In addition, he will engage with executives to explore investment prospects in Canada and foster new partnerships between organizations from both countries.
Australia
Mark Carney will then visit Sydney and Canberra, Australia, where he will meet Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and strengthen cooperation on defence, maritime security, critical minerals, trade and advanced technologies such as AI. He will address both houses of the Australian Parliament and invited dignitaries, the first such address by a Canadian prime minister in nearly 20 years. In addition, Prime Minister Carney will meet with business leaders and investors to attract new investment to Canada and promote bilateral trade and investment with Australia.
Japan
In Tokyo, Japan, Prime Minister Carney is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae to strengthen cooperation and investment in clean energy, advanced manufacturing, critical minerals and food security. The discussion will also cover strengthening joint security and defense efforts with an emphasis on promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Mark Carney said on the upcoming visit: “In a more uncertain world, Canada is focusing on what we can control. We are diversifying our trade and attracting massive new investment to create new opportunities for our workers and businesses. We are forging new partnerships abroad to create greater certainty, security and prosperity at home.”
