Exchange of technical knowledge is essential for comprehensive development of animal husbandry and animal welfare, said HK Patil, Minister for Law, Justice and Human Rights, Parliamentary Affairs, Legislation and Tourism and District Minister, Gadag.
He was speaking at the inauguration of Belagavi Division Level Technical Conference on Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare for 2025-2026 held at Mahatma Gandhi Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University (Gram Gangotri) at Nagavi, near Gadag, on 21
The conference was jointly organized by Gadag District Panchayat, Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Karnataka Animal Welfare Board (Bengaluru), Karnataka Veterinary Association (Gadag) and Humane World for Animals India Foundation.
Dr. Patil said the animal husbandry sector forms the backbone of the rural economy and farmers’ income can be increased by adopting scientific methods, modern technology and animal welfare practices.
He said while dairy farming was booming in regions like Kolar and Mandya and in neighboring Maharashtra, the growth in North Karnataka was relatively slow and stressed that the reasons needed to be investigated.
“Lack of focus on animal husbandry has affected rural wealth creation. Modern dairy farming and technology-based practices can significantly improve the economic conditions of farmers,” he said, suggesting that officials make necessary proposals and ensure that viable measures are considered in the next budget.
SV Sankanur, MLC, said that the Union Government and the State Government provide substantial funds for research and these must be utilized effectively. He emphasized that the conference should support the practical implementation of scientific knowledge in dairy, sheep and poultry farming.
The conference featured technical sessions and discussions on innovative animal health management practices. Senior officials H. Nagaraj, HB Hulagannavar, RY Gurikar, Bahubali Jain and others were present.
